Seattle From The Air

“We were sitting by the water, trying to decide what to do when we saw this plane fly in over our heads and land in the lake. We figured this was probably the only time we were going to get to do that!” the women from Florida explained as we all headed down the dock toward the tiny, seven-passenger Kenmore Air float plane. As the pilot helped each of us up the steps onto the plane and we buckled our seat belts and put on our big seafoam green headphones, I started to get pretty excited about the 20 minutes that lay ahead of me. Riding the Rails

I am a Washingtonian.  I grew up in Vancouver (The ‘Couv to locals), went to college in Tacoma and now live in the heart of Seattle.  What this means is that I know the I-5 corridor like it’s my job.  I’m quite confident that if you add up my journeys between Seattle and Vancouver it could possibly total the distance between here and the sun. Old World Russia in the Heart of Seattle

If you aspire to be in a rock band, or sing in the shower, you want to have Ann Wilson’s voice—the perfect melding of rock & roll power and musical virtuosity. Not to mention her sister Nancy, who sings AND plays guitar like nobody’s business. They were trailblazers in a still male-dominated arena of rock music in the 1970s and continue to produce and perform amazing music.  Who hasn’t sung along to “Barracuda?” Continue reading

To Like or Not to Like

“I don’t really like this one.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard a curator say those words before. I have to say, it was refreshing.

I had the pleasure of taking a tour of the Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London exhibit at Seattle Art Museum with Dr. Susan Jenkins. She’s the Senior Curator for English Heritage, which oversees Kenwood House, and the curator of this exhibit.  These paintings are like her old friends, and she knows them foibles and all.
